NJCAA Baseball Players of the Week (May 4, 2011)
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Walters State Community College (Tenn.) outfielder Cody Stubbs, CCBC-Catonsville (Md.) outfielder Marquis Curry Nieves, and Northern Essex Community College (Mass.) outfielder Domingo Cruz have been selected as the NJCAA Baseball Players of the Week. San Jacinto College - North (Tex.) pitcher Miguel Pena, Walters State Community College right-hander Cody Poarch, Heartland Community College (Ill.) right-hander Chris Razo, and Itasca Community College (Minn.) pitcher Joe Ramberg won the NJCAA Baseball Pitchers of the Week honors.

Cody Stubbs of Walters State CC demonstrated skill and clutch performances over four games this past week, three of which the team won. The 6’4” outfielder batted 10-of-16 (.625 average), scoring five runs, totaling three doubles and a triple, and batting in 10 runs. He also logged four homers! The final two games for the Senators were must-wins to clinch the conference and Cody delivered, jacking up a pair of home runs in both games of the doubleheader against Motlow State.

In the final conference game of the season, Walters State’s 6’5” right-handed pitcher, Cody Poarch, tossed a five inning no-hitter to send the Senators to a 13-0 victory over Motlow State. In the game, the Hudson, North Carolina native recorded ten strikeouts, retiring 66% of batters with his arm; he also had two walks. This win secured home-field advantage for the upcoming East Central District Tournament. |

Miguel Pena of San Jacinto College - North came within one hit of a no-hitter on the 30th as he led the Gators to a 10-0 victory over Wharton County Junior College. The 6’3” sophomore held his no-hitter until the bottom of the seventh inning when a single rolled through the infield. Pena tossed 12 K’s in the game, only giving up two walks and a single hit. This marks the third time this season Pena carried a no-hitter into the final inning. |

CCBC - Catonsville outfielder, Marquis Curry Nieves, displayed stellar offensive talent this past week in ten contests, helping his team to a 6-4 mark. The 6’0” freshman hit 17-of-35 (.486 average) with ten runs, two doubles, three walks, and a stolen base. Marquis also cranked four home runs and totaled 20 RBI’s. The Eustis, Florida native crushed three grand slams in a four-day period and broke the school record on April 27th for most RBI’s in a single game with eight! |

Heartland Community College’s right-handed pitcher, Chris Razo, logged an impressive complete game one-hitter against Lewis & Clark Community College on the 30th. He came within one strike of a perfect game against the conference foe before allowing a single in the seventh. The 6’1” sophomore tossed 11 K’s with zero walks and only one hit. The Illinois State University signee was masterful in pitching No. 2 Heartland to the 7-0 victory. Razo is 6-2 on the season. |

The Knights found offense in their 5’11” outfielder, Domingo Cruz, this past week as they won all six games they played. The freshman batted 12-of-23 (.522 average) while scoring 10 runs and totaling two doubles, five RBI’s, five walks, and eight steals! His best effort came on the 25th against Manchester CC when he hit 3-of-3 with two runs, an RBI, a walk, and three stolen bases. |

Joe Ramberg of Itasca Community College put together a six inning one-hitter against Vermilion Community College on April 28th to grab a 7-0 victory for the Vikings. The hit came as an infield single in the fifth inning. The 6’2” sophomore recorded a near perfect game as he struck out 17 of the 19 batters and did not record a walk. The 17 K’s set a new school record for strikeouts in a single game. |
