Iowa Central and Gloucester Capture 2009-2010 NATYCAA Cup Titles
ICC Tritons Win Scholarship Division for Second Straight Year
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Iowa Central Community College and Gloucester County College (N.J.) were named the winners of the 2009-2010 NATYCAA Cup at the 2010 NATYCAA Convention in Anaheim, Calif., on June 22. Iowa Central is the winner of the Scholarship Division while Gloucester was awarded the Non-Scholarship trophy.
Rankings in the NATYCAA Cup are formulated by awarding NJCAA institutions with points based on competition at NJCAA Championship events. A first place finish is worth 20 points; second place is worth 19 points; etc.
Iowa Central, from Fort Dodge, Iowa, wrapped up its second consecutive NATYCAA Cup title with 158.5 total points, which was well in front of second place Cowley College (Kan.) and Monroe Community College (N.Y.) who both finished with 143 points. Iowa Central is only the second NJCAA member college from the Scholarship Division to win the NATYCAA Cup in consecutive years. Monroe accomplished the feat in 2005-06 and 2006-07.
The Tritons outdistanced themselves from Cowley and Monroe with top finishes in women's indoor track & field and wrestling (top scholarship team). The Tritons also had top 10 finishes in men's indoor track & field (second), Division II baseball (fourth), DI men's outdoor track & field (fourth) and men's swimming & diving (sixth). ICC's women's teams also contributed to the title as the Lady Tritons had top 10 finishes in Division I cross country (second), Division I outdoor track & field (third) and swimming & diving (sixth).
Gloucester racked up a lot of points following a dominating spring. The Roadrunners won national championships in baseball and men's tennis to vault them to the top of the Non-Scholarship Division. The Roadrunners finished with 131 points in front of Herkimer County Community College (N.Y.) and Mohawk Valley Community College (N.Y.) who finished with 126 and 123 points, respectfully.
The Roadrunners also posted a third place finish in Division III men's track & field and a seventh place showing at Division III men's cross country. The GCC women's teams posted top five finishes in Division III tennis (fourth - tie) and Division III outdoor track & field (fifth). The Lady Roadrunners also had a 12th place finish in Division III cross country.
Representatives from both schools were awarded their NATYCAA Cup trophies at the groups annual convention, which this took place at the Marriot Hotel in Anaheim, Calif., on June 22, 2010. The top three teams in each division received a cash award for their institutions general scholarship fund in the amount of $2,500 for first place and $1,000 for second and third place.
The 2009-2010 academic year marks the seventh year of the NATYCAA Awards Program.
