ST. GEORGE, Utah – No. 5 seed Pima Community College bounced back from a semifinal in a big way as the Aztecs pounded out 16 hits en route to a 13-3 victory over No. 11 Lake Land (IL) College in the consolation bracket of the 2013 NJCAA Division I Women's Softball National Championship tournament Friday afternoon at the Canyons Complex. Pima (49-18) will advance to play the winner of the Butler CC/Chipola College game in another elimination game Friday night at 7:30 p.m. (MDT). Meanwhile Lake Land (51-7) sees its 2013 tournament run and season end with the loss.
The Aztecs raced out of the gate as pitcher Yvette Alvarez gave herself the lead without even having thrown a pitch as she blasted a two-run to left field as part of a three-run rally in taking a quick 3-0 lead. Pima tacked on two more runs in the second, but Lake Land would answer with two runs on its own on a Kristi Belshe two-run double to stay within striking distance at 5-2.
However Pima would not be denied as the Aztecs came back with three more runs in the third and five tallies in the fourth to take a commanding 13-2 lead. Alvarez also held Lake Land’s powerful offense in check as she limited the Lakers to two runs and three hits in four innings to take the win.
