EC Diamond Warriors Sweep Lawson State

After trailing 4-0 in the first inning, East Central Community College’s Diamond Warriors rallied for four runs in the third and added three runs in the fifth and eighth innings en route to an 11-6 victory in the first game with Lawson State (Ala.) Community College Sunday, Feb. 24 at the Clark/Gay Baseball Complex in Decatur.

EC completed the sweep with a 4-2 decision in the nightcap to improve to 5-4 on the young season.

Terrance Steele homered and Zach May and Deion Ulmer contributed three hits each to lead EC’s offense in the opener.

Steele’s solo shot came in the three-run eighth inning. The sophomore outfielder is a product of Neshoba Central High School.

May tripled in the fifth inning and belted singles in the third and sixth innings to complete a perfect day at the plate. The Newton County High School product also scored two runs.

Ulmer, a freshman from Laurel, slapped three singles and was credited with two RBIs. He also scored twice.

Other hitters included Chase Domino of Fairhope (Ala.) High School, two singles and one RBI; Rubert Alcantara of Saint George High School, Dominican Republic, triple and three RBIs; Tim Anderson of Hillcrest High School in Tuscaloosa, Ala., double and RBI; and Kalik May of Tuscaloosa County, Xzavier Franklin of Newton County, John Morgan Berry of Madison Central, Maxwell Harmon of Enterprise, and Kyle Henson of Starkville Academy, singles each.

Starter Severino Signa recorded the win for EC, allowing six earned runs on nine hits through six innings. He fanned six batters and walked two. Signa is right-handed sophomore hurler from Deer Creek High School.

In the second contest, EC grabbed the lead in the third inning after Alcantara’s RBI double scored Anderson, who had a perfect day at the plate with a triple in the third inning and singles in the first and fifth frames. Anderson was also credited with an RBI and scored a run.

Alcantara added a single to his totals for the day and finished with two RBIs.

Other hitters were Jake Bush of Brookwood High School in West Blocton, Ala., two singles; and Shotts and Henson, singles each. Bush also scored two runs.

Blake Dubuisson picked up the win for EC, as the sophomore right-hander from Long Beach allowed two earned runs on six hits through 5 2/3 innings. He fanned three batters and walked one. Right-hander Fernando Gonzalez hurled the final 1 1/3 innings to earn the save. Gonzalez fanned two batters and allowed no hits or runs. He is a sophomore right-hander from Colegio San Ignacio High School in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.

EC travels to Pensacola Junior College Wednesday, Feb. 27 in doubleheader action getting under way at 2 p.m. on the Pensacola, Fla., campus.

The Diamond Warriors will be guests of rival East Mississippi Community College Saturday, March 2. A nine-inning opener will be followed by a seven-inning battle on the Scooba campus.

East Central’s baseball program is led by head coach Neal Holliman and assistants Justin Brewer and Jack Edmonson.
