Bergen No. 1 in NJCAA DIII Men's Basketball for Eighth Straight Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Bergen Community College (N.J.) again earned the No. 1 ranking in the latest NJCAA Division III men's basketball poll, released today (Feb. 2). The Bulldogs have been No. 1 in the rankings for eight straight polls and for the fifth consecutive poll Sullivan County Community College (N.Y.) and Herkimer County Community College (N.Y.) are No. 2 and No. 3 in the poll.

Bergen again received all 80 possible poll points and all eight first place votes from voters. The Bulldogs improved to 24-0 with victories over Northampton (Va.), Sussex County (N.J.) and Atlantic Cape (N.J.).

Much of the reason why Bergen has won 24 consecutive games is due to their great shooting. As a team the Bulldogs are shooting nearly 50 percent from the field, which is tied for seventh nationally. David West leads the team with 18.9 points per game while Elgin Brown is averaging a double-double of 17.3 points and 13.1 boards a contest.

Bergen next hosts Union County (N.J.) on Feb. 2.

Sullivan improved to 20-0 on the season as they picked up three wins. Sullivan took down Ulster County (N.Y.) 108-81 on Jan. 28 as Gerardo Fernandez led all scorers with 34 points. On Jan. 30 the Generals edged Fashion Institute of Technology (N.Y.) in overtime 79-76 with Evan Page leading the way with 18 points. Jordan Thorpe was credited with 16 rebounds in the FIT win. Then on Jan. 31, Bergen defeated Nassau 75-72 as Moses Dayee scored 19 points and Thorpe pulled down 18 rebounds.

Sullivan next hosts Technical Career Institute (N.Y.) on Feb. 4.

Herkimer picked up three wins to move to 19-2 on the season and extend their winning streak to 19 games. The Generals defeated Mohawk Valley (N.Y.) 69-60 on Jan. 27 then topped SUNY-Delhi (N.Y.) 76-50 on Jan. 29 and finished the week with a 55-40 victory over Columbia Greene (N.Y.) on Jan. 31. Cliff Brown led Herkimer with back-to-back 16 point performances in the victories over Columbia Greene and SUNY-Delhi. Jerome Floyd led the Generals with 13 points in the victory over Mohawk Valley.

Herkimer is back in action on Feb. 2 when they travel to Fulton-Montgomery (N.Y.).
