Miami Dade retains volleyball crown

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Miami Dade (FL) capped off its perfect season with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-18) victory over Southern Idaho to win its second straight NJCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship.

With the win, the Sharks finish the season 34-0 and claim its sixth volleyball national championship in program history.

For the 24th time this season, Miami Dade only needed three sets to determine a contest as the Sharks only lost 12 sets out of a possible 114 this season. In each stanza against Southern Idaho, the Golden Eagles jumped out to early leads, but Miami Dade came roaring back in each frame to win in three sets and earn the 2017 NJCAA DI Volleyball Championship.

  • Sun Wenting had a match-high 11 kills, while her teammate and tournament MVP Massiel Matos netted 10 kills and totaled 15 digs.
  • Tiziana Baumrukova assisted on 35 of the Sharks' 36 kills to reach 30 or more assists in each of Miami Dade's last three matches.
  • Southern Idaho has played in two of the last three championship games with its last appearance coming away with the crown in 2015. The Golden Eagles will finish as runners up with a 30-4 record.
  • Airi Miyabi and Shiloh Peleras of Southern Idaho led the Golden Eagles in kills in the championship contest with 10 each. Peleras also added three block assists, sealing her 2017 postseason campaign with 12 total blocks.
