Winston named Spalding® DIII Coach of the Year

Colorado Springs, CO – Hostos (NY) head coach DeVernie Winston guided the Caimans to their first national title in program history. For his leadership on the hardwoods, Winston has been named the 2017-18 Spalding® NJCAA DIII Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year.

With a 58-52 victory at the DIII national tournament, Hostos topped No. 1 seed Rock Valley for the title in Winston’s third season at the helm. The top-ranked team in the nation for much of the year, the Caimans finished the season at 28-2, just two years removed from a 12-14 season.

After a loss in mid-November, Winston led Hostos to 23 consecutive victories to close out the year. The team ranked second in the nation with 85.4 points per game while allowing just 46.6 points per game, the sixth-lowest mark in the nation. The Caimans also ranked second in the country with 52.2 points per game.

A main component of the Caimans’ success came from freshman Kayla Wilson who was named the 2017-18 Spalding® NJCAA DIII Women’s Basketball Player of the Year on Thursday. Wilson was also named to the 2017-18 NJCAA DIII Women’s Basketball All-America First Team.
