Leszczyk named Spalding® DIII WBB Coach of the Year

Mark Leszczyk from Roxbury (Mass.) was honored Monday by being named the 2015-16 Spalding® NJCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year by the NJCAA DIII Women’s Basketball Committee.

Despite playing the second half of the season with just six players on the roster, Leszczyk directed Roxbury to its first national championship in program history. The Tigers had a target on their back all year long after garnering the top spot in the preseason rankings. Roxbury successfully retained its spot at No. 1 for the length of the season, finishing the year with a 25-2 overall record. After suffering an 80-78 overtime loss to Rock Valley (Ill.) in the 2014-15 NJCAA DIII Women’s Basketball Championship, Leszczyk’s team completed its goal of winning the national title in March with a 61-57 victory over Northland (Minn.) in the national tournament final.

Taking over the Roxbury program in 2007, Leszczyk just completed his eighth season as head coach of the Tigers. He has compiled a record of 167-47 at Roxbury for a career record of 222-68 in the NJCAA. This year’s campaign marked Leszczyk’s sixth 20-win season since he arrived in Roxbury Crossing. Having earned the RUSSELL ATHLETIC/WBCA Junior College/Community College Coach of the Year Award from the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association in 2010-11, this marks the second time in five years that Leszczyk’s efforts have been recognized on the national level.

A native of Providence, Rhode Island, Leszczyk served for four years in the U.S. Coast Guard after graduating from Johnson High School. He founded the Ocean State Pride Amateur Athletic program and began his NJCAA coaching career at Dean (Mass.), where he amassed a 55-21 record in DII before moving to Roxbury.
