Johnson claims Spalding® DII Player of the Year Award

The driving force behind a perfect regular season for Monroe CC (N.Y.), Shanice Johnson was tabbed Tuesday as the Spalding® NJCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Player of the Year.

Leading the Tribunes to an undefeated 29-0 record through district play, Johnson established herself as one of the top all-around players across the country. The sophomore forward ranked 10th in the nation with a 56.6 shooting percentage from the field, leading the Tribunes in scoring with 15.1 points per game on the year. Johnson’s peskiness on the defensive end of the floor yielded 3.4 steals per game, cracking the top 20 in the national leaderboards. On the glass, she posted an average of 7.6 rebounds for the season.

Despite suffering two defeats at the NJCAA DII Women’s Basketball Championship, Johnson’s performance garnered all-tournament recognition. She averaged 24.3 points and 9.3 rebounds during the Tribunes’ four games. In an 81-59 semifinals loss to eventual champion Kansas City Kansas, Johnson did all she could to keep Monroe CC in the game with a career-high 34 points and 13 rebounds.

In her first season with the Tribunes, Johnson didn’t wait long to showcase her abilities on the hardwood. In the team’s fifth game of the season, she led Monroe CC to a 98-93 win over Harford (Md.) – a team that would later qualify for the DI national tournament. Johnson hit 7 of 12 shots from the field for 25 points and sealed a double-double performance in the victory with a career-high 20 rebounds.

After graduating from Cardinal O’Hara High School in Philadelphia, Johnson started 12 games at Delaware. She transferred to VCU in 2014-15 where she sat out the season due to NCAA transfer rules before arriving at Monroe CC in 2015.

On track to return to the NCAA DI ranks next season, Johnson has a number of options on where to finish her collegiate playing career. There are numerous colleges she’s considering including teams from power conferences such as Rutgers, Kansas, St. John’s and Syracuse.
