Hinds CC men's 4x400 relay wins national championship

RAYMOND – The 4x400 meter relay team of the Hinds Community College men's track and field program won a national championship in the 2014 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Indoor Nationals in New York City, N.Y. over the weekend.

The quartet of Curtis Walker (Lexington, S.C.), Michael Newton (Atlanta, Ga.), Jerodrick Draper (Utica) and Dontavious Wright (Conyers, Ga.) finished the 4x400 in 3:10.63 to win the overall crown.

The Eagles, who ended the Indoor Nationals in sixth place overall out of 57 teams, had two second place finishes and three third place finishes in the individual events.

Wright and Mateo Edward (Panama City, Panama) came in the runner-up spots in the 800-meter run and 60-meter dash, respectively.

Wright finished the 800-meter run in 1:52.38, while Edward sprinted the 60 meters in 6.76 seconds.

Seth Peace (Brandon) and Newton each notched third place finishes in the high jump and 400-meter dash respectively.

Peace jumped 6'9 ½ "in the high jump, while Newton knocked down the 400-meter dash in 47.73 seconds.

Hinds had two other top-seven marks by Andre Jefferson (Tyler, Texas) in the long jump and by Walker in the 400-meter dash.

Jefferson notched a fifth place finish with a leap of 24'1", while Walker finished the 400-meter dash in 48.89 seconds.
