VU punches ticket to "Hutch" for 28th time in program history
 March 8, 2014

INA, Ill. – TheVincennes University Men’s Basketball Team made its bid to the NJCAA Div. I Men’s Basketball National Championship Tournament official Saturday night when the Trailblazers won the District 16 Tournament with an 80-66 victory over Olney Central in the tournament’s championship game.

Sophomore guard Devin Foster was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and VU Coach Todd Franklin received District 16 Coach of the Year honors.

Foster had a team-high 20 points Saturday, while sophomore guard Paris Burns came off the bench to score 19, freshman guard Charles Foster had 18 and sophomore forward Willie Wiley finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Olney Central was led by freshman guard Dmitri Reaves’ 33 points.

VU (31-2) saw its 37-29 halftime lead evaporate twice in the second half as the upset-minded Blue Knights (18-16) fought back to tie the game at 42-42 and again at 44-all. However, second-ranked VU fought off the challenges both times and pulled back out to leads with the help of three treys by Burns and three more 3-pointers by Devin Foster in the second half.

The Trailblazers also took advantage of a 46-29 rebounding advantage to hold Olney Central to one shot on most of the second half trips when the Blue Knights were making runs.

VU is likely to be the NJCAA Div. I Men’s NationalChampionship Tournament’s second seed, but that designation won’t be made official until later. The tournament begins March 17 at the Hutchinson Sports Arena in Hutchinson, KS. This will be VU’s 28th trip to the national tournament. The Trailblazers won the title in 1965, 1970 and 1972, while reaching the championship game in 1986. VU was a Final Four participant last season.
