HCC Sports Information

The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team won a share of the 2013 Jayhawk Conference Western Division Championship on Thursday night when Colby lost to Barton in Colby.

By virtue of that tie, the Lady Dragons will now play host to the 2013 Region VI Volleyball Championship.

Hutchinson (20-9) and Colby (23-7) tied for the conference championship with 12-2 records. The teams split two league games, winning on each team’s home floor. The 3-1 HCC victory over Colby at West Plains, Mo., didn’t figure into the league title race or regional seedings.

The Jayhawk West championship is the program’s second-straight – HCC won the league outright last season – and sixth championship won since 2004.

Hutchinson defeated Colby 3-0 on Oct. 5 at the Sports Arena to move into a first-place tie with the Trojans, who defeated HCC 3-2 on Sept. 4 in Colby. Just two days later, the Lady Dragons were upset 3-0 at Cloud County, giving Colby the inside track to the 2013 Jayhawk West crown.

HCC defeated Pratt 3-0 on Tuesday night to close out its Jayhawk West season. Colby defeated Garden City 3-0 on Tuesday, but still had to play host to Barton on Thursday. Barton lost the first set to Colby 25-20, but rallied to win the next three, 25-19, 25-23, 25-21, to upset the Trojans at the Colby Community Building.

The Lady Dragons earn the No. 1 overall seed for the upcoming Region VI Tournament because it owned the direct tie-breaker with the Trojans. Because the teams split league matches, it came down to sets won between the two teams. HCC won that tie-breaking parameter 5-3.

Hutchinson will play host to Dodge City in the opening round of the Region VI Tournament at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31 at the Sports Arena in one of four first-round matchups and the home sites of the top four seeds – Hutchinson, Colby, Seward County and Barton.

The 2013 Region VI Tournament will be Sunday and Monday, November 10-11 at the Sports Arena. Times and matchups will be announced after the opening-round matches next week.

The Lady Dragons close out the regular season on Friday and Saturday at the Jefferson College Tournament in Hillsboro, Mo. HCC will play Missouri State University –West Plains at Noon on Friday, Illinois Central at 2 p.m. on Friday, Indian Hills, at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Jefferson College at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
