No. 13 Lady Bobcats claim MACJC South Division title

PERKINSTON – The 13th-ranked Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats captured their second straight MACJC South Division championship with a 3-0 decision over Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College here Tuesday night.

JCJC is now 15-1 overall and finishes league play at 9-1. The Lady Bobcats have earned a first-round bye in the MACJC State Tournament and will next play in the semifinals on Nov. 2 at the site of the North Division women’s winner. That will be determined Wednesday when Hinds faces Holmes.

In the men’s game, the Bulldogs beat JCJC, 3-2. The Bobcats are now 11-3-1 overall and end league play at 7-3. The Bobcats will play at the North No. 2 team on Oct. 29 and the winner of that game advances to the state tournament.

Carolina Berryhill scored the only goal of the first half at 41:13.

Kelsey Cochran’s goal at 71:51 off a Logan Simpson assist made it 2-0. Kelsey Simms then scored off a Cochran assist at 78:26 to end the scoring.

Briahna Dickerson was in goal for JCJC.

The Lady Bobcats took nine shots in the game, while MGCCC had none. Each team had a corner kick.

The Lady Bulldogs are 7-6-1 and 6-4 in the division. They have qualified for the playoffs.

All of the scoring took place in the second half.

Souleymane Diakite scored the first goal off an assist by Eric Johnson to give JCJC a 1-0 lead at 48:28.

Mitchell Cecellatillo scored at 62:37 and 63:57 to give MGCCC a 2-1 lead. Johnson’s goal at 64:15 tied the game at 2-2.

Kase Kingery’s goal at 73:32 proved to be the game-winner for the Bulldogs.

Gabe Brown was in goal for JCJC and recorded three saves. MGCCC took six shots, compared to four for JCJC. The Bobcats took four corner kicks.

MGCCC is 10-4-1 overall, 8-2 in the division. They will compete in the playoffs next week.
