ECCC Warriors Crushed 45-7 by Pearl River

Martin Johnson’s late 34-yard touchdown run avoided a shutout for the East Central Community College Warriors who were 45-7 homecoming victims of Pearl River Community College Saturday, October 19 at Dobie Holden Stadium on the Poplarville campus.

Johnson’s TD scamper came with 2:39 remaining and capped a 75-yard, four-play drive engineered by freshman quarterback Donnie Farmer of Harrison Central.

Farmer quickly moved the Warriors toward the end zone with his 29-yard strike to sophomore H-back Layton Holcomb of Oak Grove followed by a 12-yard completion to freshman wide receiver Jimmy Cockrell of Columbus.

Farmer’s third pass during the drive fell incomplete but was followed by Johnson’s burst to pay dirt.

Johnson, a sophomore running back from Nanih Waiya High School, broke two tackles on his way to the end zone. He finished the day as EC’s top rusher with 45 yards on six carries.

Farmer competed 13 of 24 passes for 148 yards.

East Central fell to 1-7 overall and 0-5 following the MACJC South Division battle, while the Wildcats improved to 4-4 and 2-3.

Pearl River led 14-0 after the first period and held a 28-0 advantage at halftime.

Sophomore running back Detrick Goff of Hancock County scored first for the Wildcats following his one-yard run with 5:23 left in the first period. Sophomore kicker Mark Moore of Hattiesburg connected on the first of his six PATs. 

Scottie Murrell of Picayune Memorial extended the Wildcat lead to 14-0 with his 17-yard scamper to pay dirt with 37 seconds remaining in the first period.

Darrell Robinson gave PRC a 21-0 lead with 8:01 left before halftime, and Goff earned his second tally on another one-yard burst with 1:55 left before the break.

After a scoreless third period, Moore connected on a 22-yard field goal with 14:54 left in the division matchup and provided the Wildcats with a comfortable 31-0 lead.

Goff’s third tally came on a two-yard run with 7:42 remaining.

Freshman wide receiver Charles Ducksworth of Mize gave the Wildcats their final score when he hauled in a 41-yard TD toss from freshman quarterback Will Gross of Memphis.

East Central hosts Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Thursday, Oct. 24. Kickoff for the season finale is set for 6:30 p.m. at Bailey Stadium. The nationally ranked Bulldogs are 7-1 overall and 4-1 in league play following their 21-7 win  over Copiah-Lincoln Community College Saturday, Oct. 19

Sophomore football players will be honored during pre-game activities of the MACJC South Division battle which is also designated as Military Appreciation Night.
