 September 13, 2013

MATT DANIELS, WALTERS STATE ATHLETICS

PINEVILLE, Ky. – The Walters State Senators golf team finished off a great showing to open their 2013-14 season Tuesday afternoon with a second place finish in the Wasioto Winds Fall Kickoff at Wasioto Winds Golf Course.

The Senators were boosted by the play of sophomore Brad Hawkins, who easily took home medalist honors in the 54-hole event. Hawkins led by two shots entering Tuesday’s final round, but his final round score of even par 72 helped him close with a three-round score of 207 (9-under par) for a seven-shot win.

Walters State shot 884 (20-over par) for the three rounds to finish second behind team champion Tennessee-Martin. The Skyhawks shot 11-under par 853, including a 3-under par 285 in the final round, to win by 31 shots.

Murray State finished third at 888, followed by host Morehead State (889), Pikeville (904), Bellarmine (912) and Spalding (919) in the team standings.

Following Hawkins score, Elliott Taliaferro finished tied for 17th place with a score of 224 (8-over par) after shooting a final round 74. Cody Johnson had the low round of the day for the Senators, shooting a 2-under par 70 to finish the tournament at 228 and in 25th place.

Ryne Thompson shot a third round 75 to finish tied for 26th place with an overall score of 229, while Will Wright shot a 78 in Tuesday’s round to finish up in 34th place with a score of 236.

The Senators will return to the links on Sept. 23-24 when they compete in the Tusculum Fall Invitational at Link Hills Country Club in Greeneville.
