Senators in third at Wasioto Winds Fall Kickoff

PINEVILLE, Ky. – The Walters State golf team opened its 2013-14 season Monday by playing 36 holes in the opening two rounds of the Wasioto Winds Fall Kickoff.

The Senators ended the day in third place in the seven-team event after shooting a two-round score of 17-over par 593 (298-295). WSCC is 25 shots out of first place, which is held by UT-Martin at 8-under par 568 (280-288).

Murray State was second at 584 (288-296), followed by Walters State, host Morehead State (303-292—595), Pikeville (296-304—600), Bellarmine (302-304—606) and Spalding (316-303—619).

Walters State’s Brad Hawkins, a first team All-American last year, led the event after two rounds by following his opening round 70 with a sizzling second round of 7-under par 65 for a two-round score of 135 (9-under par), which gives him a two shot lead.

Elliott Taliaferro added a two-round score of 150 (74-76) to end the day tied for 18th place for the Senators, while Ryne Thompson was tied for 26th position after shooting 76 in both rounds for a total of 152.

Cody Johnson and Will Wright both ended the day tied for 31st place. Johnson shot 77 and 81 for a 158 total, while Wright’s total of 158 came after rounds of 81 and 77.

The third and final round is set for a shotgun start Tuesday morning.
