Phoenix's Mueller inducted into Arizona Softball Hall of Fame
 August 30, 2013

JIM HOWELL, PHOENIX COLLEGE

PHOENIX – Phoenix College is proud to announce that PC Head Softball Coach Heinz Mueller (HYNS MYOO-luhr) has officially been inducted into the Arizona Softball Foundation Hall of Fame.  The announcement comes just less than three months after Mueller led his Lady Bears’ Softball team to another appearance in the NJCAA Division II National Softball Championship Game in Clinton, Mississippi.  Mueller was part of a six-person contingent that was inducted into the hall as part of the 2013 ASF Hall of Fame Induction Banquet at the Sheraton Crescent Hotel in Phoenix this past Saturday night.

It’s just another in a long list of tremendous accomplishments for Mueller during his 24 years at the helm of the Lady Bears’ Softball Program.  Mueller has become the benchmark for other softball coaches in the NJCAA to follow, having narrowly missed capturing his 9th NJCAA National Championship in May.  His Lady Bears have owned the ACCAC Softball landscape for much of his two decades overseeing the program, adding their 12th Region I Division II Championship in the last 14 seasons to their trophy case this past spring.  After eclipsing the 1000-win mark in 2012 (only the third NJCAA Softball Coach to ever accomplish that feat), Mueller expects to record his 1100th career victory early in the upcoming 2014 season.  More importantly, Mueller’s student-athletes once again were named an NJCAA Academic All-American team this summer for achieving a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Saturday night at the ceremony, Mueller choked up with emotion during his acceptance speech, gratefully thanking the long list of student-athletes that he’s coached, as well as the list of top opponents that have continued to fuel his drive for team excellence.  Mueller will now add that prestigious plaque to his other accolades, including already being a member of the Arizona Softball Hall of Fame, Phoenix College Hall of Fame and PC Athletics’ Hall of Fame.  He’s also won the NJCAA National Championship Coach of the Year eight different times, and joined his staff to win the National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association Speedline Coaching Staff of the Year Award four times.

Mueller is just days away from welcoming his new roster of Lady Bears for the 2013-14 athletic season, since the first day of classes for all Phoenix College students is next Monday, August 19th.  Mueller and the Lady Bears will begin defense of their 2013 Region I title when they take the field for their regular season opener against Arizona Christian College on Friday, January 31st, 2014.
