 August 30, 2013

RAYMOND – The 2013 football season started exactly as desired for the Hinds Community College Eagles on Thursday night, as the Eagles won going away, 49-7, over Mississippi Delta Community College in Moorhead.

Hinds (1-0) finished the night with 462 yards of total offense (374 rushing, 88 passing) to dominate the Trojans.

James Summers (Greensboro, N.C.) was sparkling in his Eagles debut, accounting for four touchdowns. The freshman quarterback rushed 16 times for 136 yards and three touchdowns and was 7-17 for 66 yards and one touchdown and one interception through the air.

Gregory Foster (Greenville) also had a big night on the ground, as the sophomore running back had 15 carries for 137 yards and one touchdown.

The Hinds defense was stellar as well, holding the Trojans to only 187 yards of total offense (116 rushing, 71 passing) and picking up four fumbles and three sacks.

Sky Logan (Natchez) had two fumble recoveries, and Erin Brown (Monroe, La.) and Peter Bailey (Kissimmee, Fla.) had 1.5 sacks on the night, with Bailey sharing a sack with Damion Blue (Clarksdale).

Summers started the scoring barrage with 3:46 left in the first quarter, scampering in from 11 yards out to get Hinds on the board. Joseph Houston (Pelahatchie) knocked the PAT through to put the Eagles up, 7-0.

Summers then found Keithon Redding (Atlanta, Ga.) on an eight-yard touchdown strike on the next possession and the Houston point after was good to put Hinds ahead, 14-0. The scoring drive was set up by a Khiry Lucas (Cleveland) interception and 28-yard return.

Summers would put the game out of reach late in the first half, as he scored on touchdown runs from 39 yards and five yards out, and the two Houston PATs moved Hinds ahead, 28-0, heading into the break.

Tony Williams would put Delta (0-1) on the board for their only score when he recovered a Hinds fumble and rumbled in from 46 yards out to make the score, 28-7, with 7:45 left in the third quarter.

Josh Dixon (Clinton) scored his first touchdown of his sophomore campaign with 4:46 left in the third, running in from 10 yards out. Tyler Poe (Pearl) added the PAT to put the Eagles ahead, 35-7.

Diantae Thomas (Dothan, Ala.), a freshman wide receiver and quarterback, would connect with LaChristopher Lee (Cleveland) on a 22-yard touchdown with 37 seconds left in the third quarter, and the Poe extra point made the score, 42-7, Hinds.

Foster scored the final points of the night when he ran in from six yards out and Poe put the finishing touches on the scoring with 9:00 remaining in the game.

Hinds will now continue their out-of-conference route through the Delta next Thursday, traveling to Coahoma Community College for a 6:30 p.m. visit.
