WSFL Football Players of the Week
 August 28, 2013

DOUG JOHNSON, WESTERN STATES FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Mesa’s 41 -24 upset win over No. 25 New Mexico Military has resulted in a Thunderbird sweep of Player of the Week honors in the opening week of the Western States Football League. Trailing 21-17 at halftime, the Thunderbirds outscored the Broncos 24-3 in the second half for the come-from-behind win in the season opener. Due to the limited schedule nationally this week, no national Players of the Week will be selected until Sept. 2. Beginning next week, WSFL honorees will automatically be nominated as the league’s representatives for national honors.

Leading Mesa’s big win this week were:

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Mesa quarterback Blake Kemp (Chandler, Ariz., Hamilton HS) completed 29 of his 43 passes (67%) for 318 yards and three touchdowns. The sophomore signal caller completed passes to seven different receivers and also ran a touchdown in himself from seven yards out.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Sophomore cornerback DeMarlon Morris (Chicago, Ill., Percy L. Julian HS) was a key factor as the Mesa defense shut down visiting New Mexico Military in the second half. Morris recorded six tackles and two pass break-ups, and changed the game with two interceptions which he returned for a total of 82 yards.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Hometown product Brian Franklin (Mesa, Ariz., Dobson HS) was perfect on the night as the Thunderbird placekicker was 5-for-5 on points after and 2-for-2 on field goals, putting 11 points on the board. Kicking in his first ever college game, Franklin was good on field goal tries from 39 and 27 yards.
