Angels, Brewers grab former Buccaneer southpaws
 June 10, 2013

Former Blinn standouts Trevor Seidenberg, Matt Hernandez selected in 2013 MLB Draft

A pair of former Blinn College southpaws were selected in the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft.

Trevor Seidenberger, who transferred to Texas Christian University after playing for the Buccaneers in 2011 and 2012, was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 12th round. Matt Hernandez, who played the last two years at the University of Houston after pitching for the Bucs in 2010 and 2011, was selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 23rd round.

A 6-foot-2, 196-pound left-hander, Seidenberger came to the Buccaneers from Pflugerville Hendrickson High School. As a freshman, he earned all-conference honors with a 2.96 ERA, striking out 72 batters in 73 innings. He was even better as a sophomore, posting a 2.16 ERA with 82 strikeouts in 75 innings.

As a junior at TCU this season, Seidenberger went 3-3 with a 2.63 ERA in 54 2/3 innings. He struck out 62 batters while walking 15.

Hernandez, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound left-hander from Fort Bend’s William Travis High School, was named to the 2010 Texas-New Mexico Junior College All-Star Game after his freshman season, and went 5-4 with a 4.95 ERA as a sophomore. He went 4-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 17 appearances for Houston this season.

Malik Collymore, a shortstop from Port Credit Secondary School in Mississauga, Ontario, had signed an NJCAA letter of intent with the Buccaneers but is expected to sign with the St. Louis Cardinals, who grabbed the 18-year-old in the 10th round of the draft.

Another former Buccaneer, right-handed pitcher Roman Gomez, has signed with the Fort Worth Cats of the United Baseball League.
