 June 10, 2013

SECAUCUS, N.J. – Sophomore left-hander Cody Reed of Northwest has been selected 46th overall by the Kansas City Royals in the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Thursday night.

"When I saw my name on the board, it was like a weight was lifted off my shoulders," Reed said. "It was super emotional. To have my family, friends and teammates wait it out with me for over four hours meant a whole lot. It's a feeling that I really can't describe. I'm beyond blessed."

Reed is the highest draft choice in the school's baseball history and the eighth-highest all-time in MACJC history. The Horn Lake native becomes the seventh draft pick at Northwest since Mark Carson took over the program in 2006. The Rangers' previous highest pick was current assistant coach Bill Selby, who was drafted in the 13th round of the 1992 draft by the Boston Red Sox.

Reed, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound southpaw, led the team with eight wins and set a new single-season school record with 96 strikeouts in 73.1 innings. At one point during the season, Reed struck out 57 batters in five starts, including a career-high 15 against Coahoma in a 1-hit shutout. He was 8-3 with a 2.39 ERA and opponents hit just .201 against him.

An NJCAA Third Team All-American, NJCAA All-Region 23 and MACJC First Team All-State selection, Reed ends his Northwest career as the school's all-time leader in strikeouts (161), wins (16), innings pitched (137.2), batters faced (601), starts (23) and shutouts (five). He's second in career complete games (10) and third in opponent batting average (.219) and strikeouts/7 inning game (8.19).

Reed is expected to make a decision about his future by the end of Friday night on whether to sign with the Royals or go to Ole Miss.

"My advisor (Al Goetz) will talk to me and plan it out for me," Reed said. "I've already talked to the scouting director for the Royals, and they said they'll try to send me off as soon as possible and even in the next few days. I think it will all be determined today or tonight."

The first two rounds of the MLB Draft saw three players with Mississippi ties come off the board, including Mississippi State's Hunter Renfroe at 13th overall to the San Diego Padres and East Central CC's Tim Anderson 17th overall to the Chicago White Sox.

Northwest freshman outfielder Jordan Barnes is still on the board going into Day 2 of the draft which begins at 11:30 a.m. CST on Friday. An MACJC First Team All-State selection, Barnes hit .324 with 10 doubles, three triples, a home run, 24 RBIs and 31 runs scored. He was also a team-best 22-for-22 in stolen bases with a team-leading .475 on-base percentage.
