Wallace State headed to semifinals after surviving Pima comeback
 May 17, 2013

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Eighth-seeded Wallace State (AL) Community College held off a late Pima (AZ) CC rally in claiming an 8-6 victory in the winner’s bracket of the 2013 NJCAA Division I Women's Softball National Championship tournament Friday afternoon at the Canyons Complex. Wallace State (53-11) will advance to the championship bracket final to face Salt Lake (UT) CC for a spot in Saturday’s championship game Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. (MDT). Meanwhile Pima CC (48-18) will face Lake Land College in an elimination bracket game Friday night at 5 p.m. (MDT).

Wallace State broke open a tied ballgame with a six-run fifth inning, which was started by a lead-off home run from Madeline Lee. The Lions pounded out seven hits overall in the frame, including a two-run single from Kori Benson, to take a commanding 7-1 lead.

WSCC tacked on an insurance run in the sixth, which turned out to be a big run as Pima came back with three runs of its own in the home half of the frame thanks to two Lion errors, to cut the deficit in half at 8-4. The Aztecs weren’t done there as they pulled two within a pair of runs in the seventh after a two-out, two-run single from Maria Ortiz, but Wallace State pitcher BreeAnna Blevins was able to induce an infield flyout to end the game.

Benson led the Lions with two hits and three RBI, while Ortiz matched that effort to lead Pima.
