Salt Lake defeats Chipola to advance to semifinals

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Second-seeded Salt Lake (UT) Community College starter MaCauley Flint fanned nine and held #3-seed Chipola (FL) College to just one hit as she helped lead the Bruins to a convincing 12-0 victory in the winner’s bracket of the 2013 NJCAA Division I Women's Softball National Championship tournament Friday afternoon at the Canyons Complex. Salt Lake (51-9) will advance to the championship bracket final to face Wallace State (AL) CC for a spot in Saturday’s championship game Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. (MDT). Meanwhile Chipola (44-10) will face Butler (KS) CC in an elimination bracket game Friday night at 5 p.m. (MDT).

Salt Lake tallied a run in the first before blowing the game open with four tallies in the third, highlighted by a two-run single from Whitney Holt, to take a 5-0 lead. The Bruins padded their lead with a run in the fifth and put the contest on ice in the seventh with six more runs, including a Holt two-run homer.

Flint allowed only four baserunners overall, allowing just the one hit with two walks and one hit batter. Holt finished with three hits and four RBI, while Bruin shortstop Maddy Woodard collected two hits drove in four runs.

Chipola outfielder Kristen Allen accounted for the Indians lone hit with a single in the third inning.
