White, Wright advance in NJCAA tennis nationals

TUCSON, Ariz. – Jones County Junior College’s Aja White and Elizabeth Wright advanced in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament here Tuesday at the Reffkin Tennis Center.

White and Wright won their No. 2 doubles match in the consolation round, 8-2, over Sophie Baxter and Kayla Amerino of Moraine Valley Community College (Ill.). They will face of Melissa Bassoo and Erianne Adams of Cowley Community College (Kan.) at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the semifinals. The championship would be Thursday at 11 a.m.

In other consolation action, Carly Stuart and Madison Walker lost to Samantha Powell and Alexa Brandalik of Florida State College-Jacksonville, 8-1.

In No. 4 singles, White lost 9-8 (4) to Baxter of Moraine Valley and Stuart fell to Kirby Shannon of Seminole State College (Fla.), 8-4, in No. 3 singles.

JCJC is currently in 19th place with nine points.

Tyler Junior College is first with 36 points, followed by ASA College (N.Y.) with 33. Meridian Community College is eighth with 20 points and Itawamba is 15th with 11 points.
