No. 17 Bobcats split with Bulldogs

ELLISVILLE – Cody Brewer retired the final 13 batters he faced to pace the 17th-ranked Jones County Junior College Bobcats to a 6-3 victory over Mississippi Gulf Coast in game one here Wednesday at Community Bank Park.

In game two, the Bulldogs limited JCJC to only two infield singles, as MGCCC earned the split with a 5-2 victory.

The Bobcats, 26-12 overall and 14-6 in the MACJC South Division, will travel to Hinds for a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. JCJC trails Pearl River by one game in the division standings. The Wildcats swept Hinds on Wednesday and are now 15-5 in league play.

MGCCC, 21-17 overall and 8-10 in the division, visits Southwest on Saturday.

Bobcats 6, Bulldogs 3

Brewer allowed a run in the first inning and two runs (one earned) in the third.

But after issuing a two-out walk to Blake Lawson in the third, Brewer did not allow another Bulldog to reach base.

The Delta State University signee allowed five hits, walked two and struck out three as he improved to 5-1.

MGCCC took a 1-0 in the first when Chris Burdette tripled with one out and scored on Michael Gilbert’s ground out.

The Bobcats answered with two runs in the bottom of the first.

Trent Giambrone led off with a single, stole second and went to third when Codey Minter singled. Benji Sullivan’s groundout scored Giambrone and Josh Pankratz reached on an error, which scored Minter.

The Bulldogs regained the lead in the third.

Kyle Clement reached on an error to start the inning and Burdette singled. Gilbert sacrificed the runners and Tyler Quave’s single scored Clement. Jared Gates then hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Burdette and gave MGCCC a 3-2 lead.

But the Bobcats would send nine batters to the plate and score four runs in the bottom of the third.

Minter led off with a single, Sullivan reached on a bunt single and Tyler Graves singled to load the bases. Josh Pankratz then singled Minter home and Jordan Stark’s sacrifice fly to center scored Sullivan.

After Alex Shermer was intentionally walked, Collin Dexter drove in courtesy runner Steven Billingsley with a single. Stephen Stiglets then drove in Pankratz with a groundout to make it 6-3.

Giambrone, Minter and Sullivan had two singles each for the Bobcats. Stiglets had a double, while Graves, Pankratz and Dexter added singles.

Burdette tripled and singled for MGCCC, while Ryne Long singled twice and Quave singled.

Stuart Holmes started and took the loss. He went 2 1/3 innings, allowed six runs (five earned), seven hits, walked one and struck out none. Jason McDonald went the final 3 2/3 innings, gave up no runs, three hits, walked one and struck out three.

Bulldogs 5, Bobcats 2

Clement’s solo home run to centerfield to start the fifth broke a 2-2 tie and propelled the Bulldogs to the win.

Starting pitcher Chris Wease allowed just an infield single to Sullivan in the first and then retired 14 batters in a row before issuing a walk to Minter to start the sixth. Reliever Jordan Mata came in and allowed an infield single to Shermer in the seventh.

JCJC took a 2-0 lead in the first when Giambrone reached on an error and Minter walked. The runners advanced on a passed ball and Sullivan’s single scored Giambrone. Stark’s sacrifice fly to right drove in Minter.

MGCCC tied it in the second. Quave and Long each singled to start the inning. Zac Haarala’s single scored Quave and Clement’s single scored Long.

It stayed that way until Clement homered to start the fifth and make it 3-2.

The Bulldogs added a run in the sixth when Lawson was hit by a pitch. He was sacrificed to second by Garrett Odom and scored on Clement’s single.

MGCCC finished the scoring in the seventh. Gilbert reached on a two-base error to start the inning and scored on Gates’ two-out single.

Jon Mark Herrington started for JCJC. He pitched three-plus innings, allowed two runs, five hits, walked two and struck out one. Jeremy Kidd pitched two innings in relief and was charged with the loss. He gave up one run, four hits and struck out one. Cole Barlow pitched the final two innings, allowed two runs (one earned), two hits and struck out one.

Wease got the victory. He went five-plus innings, allowed two runs (one earned), one hit, walked two and struck out five. Mata got the save. He went two innings, gave up one hit and recorded a strikeout.

Clement homered and singled twice for the Bulldogs. Burdette and Lawson each had two singles, while Gilbert, Quave, Long and Gates added singles.
