OC Sports Softball Players of the Week: April 8-14
 April 17, 2013

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Kate James (Butler CC, Kan.), Yvette Alvarez (Pima CC, Ariz.), Paige Crawford (Highland CC, Kan.), Casey Baddley (Northwest Mississippi CC) and Carlie Sweet (Central Lakes College, Minn.) have been named OC Sports NJCAA softball players of the week for games April 8-14.


DIVISION I PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Kate James – Butler Community College, Kan.
Catcher – Maize, Kan. – Maize High School

James’ power at the plate propelled the Grizzlies to seven wins last week, extending their win-streak to 16 games. Batting for a .579 average (11-for-19), James totaled 17 RBIs and scored 15 runs on the week. The sophomore compiled a 1.632 slugging percentage that included two doubles and six home runs. James leads No. 1 Butler in 2013 with 18 home runs and a 1.034 slugging percentage, ranking fifth in the nation in both categories.



DIVISION I PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Yvette Alvarez – Pima Community College, Ariz.
Right-Handed Pitcher – Sahuarita, Ariz. – Sahuarita High School

The Aztecs continued to build off the success of Alvarez last week as the ace went 2-0 in her three appearances. In 17 innings of work, Alvarez held opposing batters to just one run on 14 hits. The sophomore tallied 22 strikeouts on the week, including 10 in just five innings in an 8-0 win at GateWay CC (Ariz.). Alvarez has had a busy season with the Aztecs, ranking fourth in the nation with 200.2 innings pitched while maintaining a 1.92 ERA.


DIVISION II PLAYER OF THE WEEK 
Paige Crawford – Highland Community College, Kan.
Pitcher/Designated Player – Salina, Kan. – Salina South High School

Crawford made the most out of her hits last week in the Scotties’ four victories. The sophomore built a .625 batting average (5-for-8) with 10 RBIs and seven runs scored. Going yard on every hit, Crawford hammered five home runs on the week for a 2.500 slugging percentage. The No. 9 Scotties enjoyed Crawford’s hot streak last week as she hit five of her six home runs on the year.



DIVISION II PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Casey Baddley – Northwest Mississippi Community College
Right-Handed Pitcher – Nesbit, Miss. – Desoto Central High School

Baddley secured her second Pitcher of the Week award this season with three wins and some impressive relief work for the Rangers. The freshman dealt back-to-back complete game shutouts Tuesday at Itawamba CC (Miss.). For the week, Baddley accumulated 15 strikeouts and gave up no earned runs in 22.2 innings of work. In 2013, Baddley sports a 2.26 ERA in a team-high 80.2 inning pitched.


DIVISION III PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Carlie Sweet – Central Lakes College, Minn.
Catcher – Brainerd, Minn. – Brainerd High School

The Raiders have had a rough start to their 2013 season but Sweet provided them with a spark last week. Sweet hit for a .667 batting average (10-for-15), driving home 16 RBIs and scoring eight runs of her own. The sophomore hit a double, a triple and five home runs for 1.867 slugging percentage. Sweet also displayed a good eye at the plate, drawing eight walks on the week.
