Bobcat netters end regular season; head to state tournament

WESSON – The Jones County Junior College tennis teams ended regular season play here Monday afternoon.

The Lady Bobcats defeated Co-Lin, 7-2, while the men’s team dropped a 5-4 decision. The Lady Bobcats end regular season play at 12-2, while the men’s team finishes with a 7-7 mark.

Both teams will head to the MACJC State Tournament, which will be held in Tupelo Thursday through Saturday of this week. The tournament draw takes place Wednesday night and the event begins Thursday morning.

The top three teams on both the men and women’s side will advance to the Region 23 Tournament, which will be April 24-25 in Meridian.

Lady Bobcats 7, Lady Wolves 2

JCJC swept the doubles matches.

In No. 1 doubles, Alicia Domoney and Stephanie Smith whipped Abby Morris and Haley Wicker, 8-1. Brenda Hegwood and Elizabeth Wright beat Melody Smith and Madison Rials, 8-3, in No. 2 doubles. Carly Stuart and Madison Walker edged Courtney Watts and Meredith Allen, 9-7, in No. 3 doubles.

Domoney beat Melody Smith, 6-1, 6-2, in No. 1 singles, while Stephanie Smith defeated Morris, 6-3, 6-3, in No. 2 singles. Wright whipped Rials, 6-1, 6-1, in No. 5 singles and Brooke Martin defeated Allen, 6-1, 6-1, in No. 6 singles.

Hegwood fell to Wicker, 6-4, 3-6, 10-4, in No. 3 singles and Aja White lost to Watts, 6-4, 6-1, in No. 4 singles.

Wolves 5, Bobcats 4

The Bobcats won one doubles match.

Josh Lomas and Tanner Chamblee defeated Sawyer Hudson and Troy Allred, 8-1. Ryan Young and Harrison Thomas lost to Brance Crane and Mark Ladd, 8-5, in No. 2 doubles and Caleb Byrd and Jonathan Jones fell to Gib Britt and Josh Smith, 8-5, in No. 3 doubles.

Lomas defeated Smith, 6-3, 6-2, in No. 1 singles, Chamblee downed Allred, 6-2, 6-1, in No. 2 singles and Daniel Sullivan outlasted Hudson, 6-1, 5-7, 10-1, in No. 6 singles.

Young lost to Ladd, 6-2, 6-1, in No. 3 singles, Byrd fell to Crane, 6-2, 6-0, in No. 4 singles and Luke Holston lost to Britt, 6-1, 6-3, in No. 5 singles.
