VU drops semifinal game to NW Florida State, 76-69
March 23, 2013
HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Vincennes University Men’s Basketball Team fell behind Northwest Florida State Friday in the teams’ NJCAA Div. I Men’s Basketball National Championship Tournament game and then sliced the double-digit lead late in the contest. But the Trailblazers were never able to get closer than four points and fell 76-69 to the Raiders.
The loss sent Northwest Florida State to the tournament’s championship game Saturday vs. Central Florida and means that VU (33-3) will take on Spartanburg Methodist earlier in the evening Saturday in a game for third place in the national tournament.
On Friday, sophomore Darius Carter had a game-high 31 points and nine rebounds for the Trailblazers. Sophomore Deshawn Delaney had his second consecutive double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Sophomore Chris Jones led the Raiders with 21 points.
VU had another slow start and trailed 38-26 at halftime on the way to falling behind 65-49 at one point in the second half. But the Trailblazers climbed back into the game with a run that carved the Raiders’ lead to just four when Carter hit a late 3-pointer from the top of the key.
However, the Trailblazers, who outrebounded the Raiders 40-33, couldn’t get closer because field goal attempts and free throws on ensuing possessions wouldn’t fall and Northwest Florida State held on for the win.
VU will take on Spartanburg Methodist at 6 p.m. (Vincennes time) Saturday.
