7th-ranked Lady Bobcats split at SMCC

SUMMIT – The 7th-ranked Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats earned a split with Southwest Mississippi Community College here Saturday afternoon.

In the opener, JCJC broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the sixth inning and beat the Lady Bears, 3-1. In game two, Southwest got a home run from Mary Margaret McLaurin in the third inning and made it stand up as the hosts won, 1-0.

The Lady Bobcats, 17-3 overall and 2-2 in the MACJC South Division, return to Community Bank Park on Tuesday to host Hinds Community College. The doubleheader begins at 4 p.m. and both games will be webcast on www.jcjc.tv with Shawn Wansley handling play-by-play duties.

Southwest, 11-11 overall and 1-3 in the division, entertains Co-Lin on Tuesday.

Samantha Buller went the distance and got the win for JCJC in game one, allowing seven hits and recording eight strikeouts. Karley Crosby and Bethany Volking each had two singles for JCJC, while Relanda McFarland, Brooke David and C.C. Lawn each singles.

SMCC got two singles from Kristen Gekler and Brie Harper, while Chelsea Nette, Katie Allen and Carrie Phillips added singles. Phillips went the distance and took the loss, allowing seven hits and recording six strikeouts.

SMCC scored a run in the first and JCJC tied it in the second. It stayed that way until the sixth.

In game two, Rachel Smith went the distance and got the win. She gave up six hits and fanned nine. Buller went the distance for JCJC and took the loss, allowing just four hits and striking out five.

Makenzie Hawkins doubled and singled for the Lady Bobcats, while McFarland doubled. Kalyn McNabb, David and Andi Barrett had singles.

McLaurin homered and singled for the Lady Bears. Nette had a double and Brie Harper had a single.
