NORTHEAST BASEBALL OPENS WITH PAIR OF WINS
 February 18, 2013

BOONEVILLE, Miss. –  Northeast Mississippi Community College’s baseball team opened the season on Sunday, February 17 with a sweep of Southeastern Community College and Arkansas Baptist College at Harold T. White Field in Booneville.

Northeast knocked off Southeastern Community College from West Burlington, Iowa in five innings in the season opener before downing the Buffaloes of Arkansas Baptist 10-1 in the nightcap.

In the season opener against the Blackhawks, Northeast jumped on the visitors early and never let up.

Northeast tallied its first run of the season when Dalton Sims of DeSoto Central legged out a two-out, infield chopper to third that allowed courtesy runner Heath Wood (Kossuth) to score and the route was on.

Sophomore and team captain Ethan Estes of Biggersville gave Ben Hellums three more runs to work with when Estes connected on a Danny Pacha offering and dropped a two-out, three-run double into the gap in right centerfield.

With the four-run cushion after the second inning, Hellums went to work and limited the Blackhawk offense to just four hits while striking out four and going the distance on the mound for the Tigers.

Josh Mills of Lafayette County and Will Robertson of Falkner led the way for the Tigers offensively in the opener with the pair accounting for four of the Tigers nine hits in the affair.

Mills knocked around a single and a double in the contest while Robertson had a pair of singles in the win.

In the nightcap, Northeast rallied after falling behind early to the Buffaloes.

After trailing 1-0, Northeast tied the contest in the home half of the first and then staked a five-run second inning on Cole Braunecker.

With the six-run cushion, Mississippi State University transfer Tanner Gaines settled down and with the help of the Tiger pitching staff limited Arkansas Baptist to just a pair of hits in the seven-inning contest.

Robertson, who finished the day with four hits, led the Tigers on offense with a pair of singles in the nightcap while Wood had a double for Northeast.

With the two wins, Northeast improved to 2-0 on the year and will look to continue its momentum when it hosts Calhoun (Ala.) Community College on Tuesday, February 19 at Harold T. White Field in Booneville. The non-division doubleheader is set for a noon start.
