Baseball Bobcats split opening home doubleheaderFebruary 17, 2013

ELLISVILLE – Stanley Farrar pitched four innings of one-hit baseball to spark the Jones County Junior College Bobcats to a 4-1 victory over Jefferson Davis Community College (Ala.) here Saturday afternoon at Community Bank Park.
The Bobcats dropped a 3-2 decision to 16th-ranked Southeastern Iowa Community College earlier in their opening home doubleheader. In the day’s first game, Jeff Davis defeated Southeastern, 6-1.
The Bobcats, 2-2, travel to Mississippi Delta Community College for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday.
Jones County 4, Jefferson Davis Community College (Ala.) 1
Farrar, 1-0, retired the first nine batters he faced before Hunter Myrick doubled to start the fourth. He picked up the victory, allowing just the one hit and striking out five.
Jon Mark Herrington pitched the fifth inning and gave up two hits, while Jeremy Kidd went the final two innings, allowed one hit and got the save.
The Bobcats scored a run in the first inning when Trent Giambrone singled and Codey Minter reached on a fielder’s choice. Minter then advanced to third base on errant pick off throw by the pitcher. A Tyler Graves’ groundout scored Minter.
JCJC added two more runs in the third when Minter singled with one out and Benji Sullivan followed with an RBI double down the leftfield line. Graves then delivered an RBI single to center to make it 3-0.
The Bobcats plated a run in the fourth when Cole Barlow led off with a double and scored on Giambrone’s two-out single to center.
Jeff Davis scored its run in the fifth when Reid Johnson singled with one out and was replaced by pinch-runner Matthew Holmes. Holmes took second on a groundout and advanced to third and home via wild pitches.
Giambrone had two singles, while Sullivan and Barlow added doubles. Minter, Graves and Lamar Anthony had singles.
Michael Yarborough started and took the loss for the Warhawks. He went four innings, gave up six hits, walked one, hit one and struck out one. Tyler Murphy pitched the final two innings, gave up one hit and struck out one.
Myrick doubled for Jeff Davis, 5-6, while Brandon Ray, Johnson and Wes Dickey added singles.
Southeastern Iowa 3, Jones County 2
Trent Giambrone singled and Codey Minter followed with an opposite field, two-run home run in the third inning to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.
Freshman lefthander Dawson Kennard held the Blackhawks without a hit for 4 2/3 innings, but Southeastern Iowa came alive in the fifth.
Michael DeSantis walked with one out, stole second and took third on a throwing error. With two outs, Brayton Carlson singled DeSantis home and Lazaro Romero followed with another single. Jose Cruz then doubled to center to drive in Carlson and Romero.
The Bobcats got runners on base in the sixth and seventh innings, but could not score.
Kennard was charged with the loss. He went 4 2/3 innings, allowed three runs, three hits, walked three, hit one and struck out two. Cole Barlow went the final 2 1/3 innings, allowed one hit, hit two and struck out one.
Wesley Estrada went the distance and posted the victory. He allowed four hits, one walk, hit two batters and struck out five.
Minter homered, while Giambrone, Tyler Graves and Lamar Anthony singled for JCJC.
Cruz doubled and singled for the Blackhawks, while Romero and Carlson added singles.
