 February 17, 2013

Panthers Top Cayuga to Close Regular Season 19-4

AUBURN, N.Y. – The Tompkins Cortland Community College men’s basketball team set a new program record Saturday by winning for the 19th time this regular season, passing the standard established by the 2009-10 team. Win number 19 came at Cayuga Community College by a final of 74-65, and it leaves TC3 with a final regular season record of 19-4 overall and 11-1 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference. The Panthers, the #1 seed in the MSAC playoffs, will host the conference semifinals Friday, where TC3 will play the winner of the opening round game between #4 Corning Community College and #5 Onondaga Community College at 5 p.m. Cayuga ends the MSAC regular season with a record of 7-5 in conference and 9-17 overall.

At Cayuga on Saturday, TC3 set the tone early while jumping out to a 38-22 lead at the half. The Panthers used a balanced attack that featured points from ten players, including eight with at least five points. Tyseem Lyles (Health Professions H.S./Brooklyn) was the high scorer with 17 points, adding five rebounds, five steals, and four assists to his line. Adam Park (Spencer-Van Etten H.S./Lockwood) and Laszlo Hajnoczi (Hunter-Tannersville H.S./Tannersville) each had 10 points with seven and six rebounds, respectively. Todd Smith (Crosby H.S./Waterbury, Conn.) had a big game with nine points, eight assists, and three steals. Jaanai Beckford (Northstar Christian Academy/Yonkers) had seven points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

The Panthers will be attempting to win the MSAC tournament championship for the second time in the history of the program. The 2009-10 team won the conference title after going 18-5 during the regular season. That team eventually advanced to the NJCAA Region III semifinals and finished the season with a program-best final record of 21-6.
