No. 12 Senators finish 3-1 in Chipola JUCO Classic
 February 9, 2013

MARIANNA, Fla. — A day after knocking off 20th host Chipola in the Chipola JUCO Classic, the 12th ranked Walters State Senators picked up two wins against Shelton State and dropped a one-run decision to the host Indians in the final day of the Florida trip for the Senators.

The Senators opened the day with a 2-1 loss to Chipola before finishing up a rain-suspended contest against Shelton State from Friday with an 11-4 win. WSCC closed the day with a late rally to win 5-3 over the Buccaneers in the nightcap.

With the 3-1 run this weekend, the Senators improve to 3-4 on the season entering Monday’s home opener. WSCC is set to host three games at home this week, with King College, USC Salkehatchie and Sinclair all paying a visit to Senator Field.

In the loss to Chipola, Reid Mathews led the Senators with two hits at the plate, while Jake Farr and Elijah Sutherland each had a hit.

WSCC held a 1-0 lead after the third inning, but the Indians (7-5) plated runs in the fourth and fifth innings to get the win despite not recording a hit until the fifth frame.

Taylor Patterson (0-2) was the tough luck loser on the mound for the Senators after giving up just two earned runs on two hits while fanning six batters and walking four in a complete game effort.

In the completion of the rain-suspended contest with Shelton State, the Senators plated a season high 11 runs, including six runs in the fifth, to roll to the win.

Sutherland led the Walters State offensive attack with two doubles, a home run and four RBIs, while Jared Allen added two hits with a homer and three runs batted in. Austin Norrell also went deep in the win, and Matt Harrell and Colin Bennett both drove in runs for the Senators.

Chase Cunningham (1-0) tossed 2.2 innings to get the win. The Belmont signee was on top of his game, allowing only one hit and striking out six batters in relief of Jay Gause.

The finale saw a freshman step up and be the hero for the Senators, as Bryan Bussey twice gave Walters State the lead with his RBI double in the seventh proving to be the game winner.

Bussey also added a 2-run homer in the second inning for a 2-1 lead at the time, and Mathews drove in a run in the fourth for a 3-1 lead. After the Bucs tied it at 3 in the fifth, Bussey put WSCC on top in the seventh and Mathews added another RBI to make it 5-3.

Sutherland added two hits in the win, including another two-bagger, while Farr, Shane Riley and Brycen Roberts each had a hit for the Senators.

Corey Greeson (1-0) got the win in his first action for Walters State, working two hitless innings. Tyler Brosius worked five innings as the starter, giving up three earned runs on eight hits.

The Senators open their home schedule Monday when they host King College. First pitch from Senator Field is scheduled for 2 p.m.
