VU Women lose the battle of the boards in overtime loss at Cincinnati State
 February 2, 2013

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Despite a 20-point, 17-rebound performance by freshman Ashley Hawkins, the Vincennes University Women’s Basketball Team dropped a 73-65 overtime decision at Cincinnati State Saturday afternoon.

Rugged interior play led to Hawkins going to the line 16 times and she hit 14 of her free throw attempts. Fourteen of her 17 boards were on the defensive end.

VU (8-15) also got 12 points from sophomore Zhanna Chukhrii and nine each from freshmen Shelby Parmer and Chelsea Jellison. Freshman Deborah Martin had eight points.

Cincinnati State’s Desiree Ash had a game-high 24 for the host Surge.

The Trailblazers won the battle behind the arc as Jellison drained three treys and Chukhrii had a pair of 3-pointers. Freshman Maggie Snider added a 3-pointer as well, as VU outshot Cincinnati State 6-2 from long range. But the Surge outrebounded the Trailblazers 47-37 (including 24 offensive rebounds for Cincinnati State) and went 23-for-34 at the line while VU was 17-for-23 at the stripe.

VU will be idle until Saturday, Feb. 9, when the Trailblazers head to Olney Central for a 6:30 p.m. (Vincennes time) game that will be followed by the VU Men’s Basketball Team taking on Olney Central at 8:30 p.m.
