No. 8 Lady Senators improve to 15-1

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. – The eighth ranked Walters State Lady Senators allowed a season-high in points Tuesday against Cleveland State. The bad news for the visiting Lady Cougars was they lost by 24.

The Lady Senators forced more than 20 turnovers and shot better than 50 percent in the first half, as they pulled away for an 81-57 win over Cleveland State in Tennessee Community College Athletic Association play inside ‘Z’ Buda Gymnasium.

With the win, the Lady Senators improve to 15-1 overall and 8-0 in TCCAA action. The loss snaps a 6-game winning streak for the Lady Cougars, dropping them to 11-6 and 4-4.

The Lady Senators jumped out to an 8-0 lead less than two minutes into the game, but the Lady Cougars stayed close until a big run for Walters State midway through the first half.

Donnesha Shuler sparked the run with 12 points, building the lead to 34-13 with 5:58 left until halftime. Cleveland State scored 13 straight points, nine from Mercedes Owens, to trim the lead to 34-26, but the Lady Senators closed the half on an 11-4 run to take a 45-30 halftime lead.

Walters State built the lead by shooting 54.1 percent (20 of 37) in the first half, and they outrebounded the Lady Cougars 21-12 in the opening 20 minutes. Shuler had 18 points in the half on 8 of 8 shooting, while Bre Hall added 10 points and Aisjah Roan had seven points and six assists.

The Lady Cougars shot just 34.6 percent (9 of 26) in the half, but they made 4 of 5 from long range with Owens connecting on three of those. Owens led Cleveland State with nine points in the half.

The Lady Senators scored the first six points of the second half and never let the lead dip below 15 the rest of the way.

Cleveland State cut it to 59-44 with 10 minutes to play, but Walters State continually built on the lead the rest of the game. The Lady Senators pushed the margin back to 20 with five minutes left and scored the final six points of the contest for their largest lead of the game.

Walters State shot 44.9 percent (31 of 69) from the field in the contest, making only 2 of 11 from long range. They also made 17 of 25 from the free throw line.

Shuler gunned in a career-high 28 points and hauled in eight rebounds to lead the Lady Senators in the win, while Tangela Crenshaw added 18 points and eight boards. Roan totaled 12 points and Hall finished with 10 in the win.

Cleveland State shot 34 percent (16 of 47) in the contest and turned the ball over 22 times. Jara Gasper led the Lady Cougars with 14 points in the loss.

The Lady Senators will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Chattanooga to take on TCCAA rival Chattanooga State. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
