Late scoring run helps Lady Texans squeak by Mesa
January 1, 2013MESA, Ariz. – Sophomore Shea Myatt nailed a three-pointer with just over a minute remaining in the Lady Texans game versus Mesa, pulling the Lady Texans within a point of their opponent and South Plains followed that up with a couple defensive stands that ultimately gave Stephanie Moore the opportunity to win the game with a tough shot in the paint as the clock wound down as the Lady Texans defeated Mesa with a thrilling 51-50 victory Monday afternoon. The Lady Texans (10-2) were down to their final chance when Moore received the ball in a crowded paint and used a strong effort to put her team ahead. South Plains ultimately overcame poor shooting, 19 turnovers, and a deficit for most of the game.The Lady Texans trailed by as much as nine points in the first half and were down 25-17 with 4:43 remaining before putting together a 7-0 run that sent South Plains to the locker room with only a one point deficit. With only three minutes left in the game, South Plains again found themselves in a fairly deep hole, 50-43.Alexius Dawn made the first of two free throw attempts and then Sydney Hearn rebounded and put back the second attempt to bring South Plains within four. After surviving a second chance opportunity by Mesa, Myatt came down and hit her big three pointer that wound up setting up the win for Moore.Freshman Tasheena Moore recorded her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 13 rebounds, helping the Lady Texans win the rebounding battle 39-32. Sydney Hearn chipped in with a team high 13 points. The Lady Texans return to action when they square off with Scottsdale Community College (5-8) on New Years Day.
