Senators take down Jackson State, 95-87

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. – The Walters State Senators used one of their best offensive shooting performances of the season Friday to knock off Tennessee Community College Athletic Association rival Jackson State, 95-87, inside ‘Z’ Buda Gymnasium.The Senators shot better than 56 percent from the floor, as they won their second straight game to improve to 5-6 on the year and 2-2 in TCCAA play.

The loss dropped the Generals to 4-4 on the year and 1-4 in league play.

Tyler Ailshie knocked down a pair of shots to give the Senators a quick lead before the Generals took an 8-7 lead. With the game tied at 12, Ailshie buried a 3-pointer to spark a 9-0 run that put Walters State on top 21-12 with 11:35 left in the first half.

Leland Robinson owned the final 12 minutes of the half, scoring 12 of his 14 first-half points in that stretch, as the Senators built the lead as high as 12 points before settling for a 42-36 lead at halftime.

Walters State shot 46.2 percent (18 of 39) from the floor in the opening half, despite making only 1 of 11 from long range. Robinson had 14 points in the half, while Ailshie and Elgrin Wilson had nine each for the Senators.

Jackson State shot 42.1 percent (16 of 38) in the first half, despite only knocking down 1 of 8 from long distance. Braxton Gilliespie had six points to lead the Generals in the half.

Jackson State tied the game early in the second half at 47, but they never regained possession of the lead. Fred Yarbrough, who had only four points in the second half, went on a tear after the Generals pulled even, scoring nine points in a four-minute stretch to help the Senators take a 64-55 lead.

The Generals cut the lead to 76-72 with less than six minutes left, but that was as close as they got. Wilson made a short jumper and Yarbrough converted a 3-point play to build the lead to double digits, and they were not threatened down the stretch.

Walters State shot a sizzling 56.3 percent (40 of 71) from the field, including a 68.8 percent (22 of 32) showing in the second half, and they won the battle on the glass, 46-37. The Senators had 26 assists in the win, led by Tony Wilkerson with seven.

Robinson paced Walters State with 22 points, while Yarbrough added 20, Ailshie chipped in 18, Wilson had 17 and Darius White had 13 in the win.

Jackson State shot 43.2 percent (35 of 81) from the floor in the contest. Jamichael McKinnie and Areka McKinnie led the Generals with 19 points each, while Clarence Wilson tallied 12, Gilliespie had 11 and Tyler Black added 10 in the loss.

The Senators will be back on the hardwood Saturday when they host defending TCCAA champion Columbia State Chargers. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m.
