Yarce Leads CCRI Knights Comeback from 22 Down to get by Cuyahoga
 November 19, 2012

Warwick, R.I. – November 19, 2012:   The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team continued their play in the Monroe Classic on Sunday by playing the Challengers of Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) from Cleveland, OH.  The Knights defeated Tri-C 73-66.  With the victory the Knights improve to 2-2 on the season.

Once again, for the second time in as many days, the Knights found themselves in a huge hole as they were trailing 46-24 with 3:04 remaining in the first half.  The Knights went on an 8-4 run to go into the halftime break trailing the Challengers 50-32.   In the second half they Knights ratcheted-up the defensive effort with full-court pressure and a half-court 1-3-1 trapping defenses.  The pressure frustrated Cuyahoga and created scoring opportunities for the Knights as they cut into the Challengers’ lead.  With 12:23 left the Knights had cut the lead to nine points with the score 56-47.  The Knights kept up the pressure and with 2:35 left in the game Co-Captain Bryan Yarce (Cranston, RI) sank two free throws to give the Knights their first lead of the game 66-65.  The Knights momentum continued as they went on to win by seven points with the final score of 73-66.  The Knights’ defensive pressure helped them to outscored the Challengers 41-16 in the second half and lead them to the thrilling comeback victory.

Leading the way for the Knights was Co-Captain Bryan Yarce who had team-highs with 22 points, seven assists, and seven steals along with 5 rebounds to spearhead the Knights’ comeback.  Yarce was helped by freshman Jerome Harris (Hartford, CT) who scored 12 points with five rebounds, three steals, and two assists, freshman Shaquille Rickets (Hartford, CT) had 13 points and six rebounds, and  Co-Captain Isaac Medeiros (Johnston, RI) added  nine points and team-high seven rebounds. Making the 22 point comeback all the more remarkable was doing it despite the absence of 1st Team All American Desmond Williams, out with a foot injury.Yarce's backcourt partner hopes to returmn to action this week for the Knights.

Head Coach Rick Harris commented after the big victory “Thrilling team victory today! We needed something to give us life and the 1-3-1 press did that.  It baffled, Cuyahoga while giving our team energy.  This type of comeback victory can be a great confidence builder for our young men as we move forward.”

The Knights are back in action Tuesday the 20th for their home opener when they will host the Pointers of UConn-Avery Point at 7:00pm at the Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse located on the CCRI Knight Campus in Warwick.
