LIBERAL – The No. 5 Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team shot 61 percent in the second half and held Frank Phillips College to only four field goals in the final 20 minutes to break open an eight-point halftime lead and cruise to an 80-43 victory over the Plainsmen on Friday at the Billy’s/Day’s Inn Classic at Seward County Community College’s Greenhouse.

Hutchinson had 16 first-half turnovers and shot 40 percent in the first half as Hutchinson led 33-25 at halftime. But the Lady Dragons were 19 of 31 in the second half from the field, hitting 2 of 2 from 3-point range to out-score Frank Phillips 47-18. The Plainsmen were just 4 of 20 shooting in the second half.

Sophomore Chrisstasia Walter had a team-high 14 points to go with six rebounds and seven assists to lead the Lady Dragons (5-0).

Freshmen Jamie Patrick and Bri Starks had 13 points each for HCC. Patrick was 6 of 11 shooting with eight rebounds. Starks had had eight rebounds on 6 of 7 shooting. Sophomore Jasmine Patterson also scored in double figures with 10 points.

Freshman Jen’Von’Ta Hill dished out 10 assists.

Hutchinson finished 32 of 63 shooting overall (50.8 percent), going 3 of 6 from 3-point range and 13 of 26 from the foul line. The Lady Dragons dominated the boards 52-24 and had 25 assists, but committed a season-high 21 turnovers.

Natasha Thomas had 10 points to lead the Plainsmen, who shot 29.2 percent, going 5 of 20 from 3-point range and 10 of 17 from the free-throw line. The Plainsmen committed 26 turnovers.

The Lady Dragons will play South Plains at 2 p.m. on Saturday to close out the Billy’s/Day’s Inn Classic.
