Mohawk Valley survives tournament to become champions of DIII women's soccer
November 11, 2012
Earning their second women's soccer national title in the last decade, Mohawk Valley Community College (N.Y.) lifted the NJCAA DIII national championship trophy after throttling Gloucester County College (N.J.) 4-1 Sunday in the tournament final.
What started as a tightly-contested defensive struggle quickly turned in favor of Mohawk Valley after the Hawks scored two goals in less than 80 seconds midway through the first half. The Hawks nursed their 2-0 lead early in the second half until the Roadrunners cut the deficit in half with their first goal. Mohawk Valley quickly responded with their third goal of the match and eventually scored their fourth for good measure.
Despite cruising to victory in the championship, the road to the final match was a difficult one for the Hawks. In their opening contest of the tournament, Mohawk Valley scored two goals in the final 10 minutes for a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Holyoke CC (Mass.). Facing Anoka-Ramsey CC (Minn.) in the semifinals, the Hawks edged out a 2-0 win.
Mohawk Valley claimed their first national title since the inaugural DIII national championship tournament in 2003. The Hawks' last appearance in the national championship match came in 2004 when they fell to Richland College (Texas) in two rounds of penalty kicks.
