MIDDLE GA WOMEN"S SOCCER TEAM WINS FIRST REGION CHAMPIONSHIP
 November 3, 2009

On Saturday, October 31, the MGC Women's Soccer team won the Region 17 soccer championship in Albany, Georgia with a 1-0 victory over Darton College. Tashana Vincent scored the lone goal with 22 minutes remaining
on a pass by Lauren Hodges. April Hill recorded the shutout in goal for the Lady Warriors. In the Region semifinal on Friday night, MGC defeated Young Harris 5-4 on penalty kicks after two periods of overtime failed to yield a winner. Monique Pryce scored the winning goal with Hill recording the shutout and the key save in the penalty shutout. MGC is now 15-4 on the season and will now play Polk in the District playoff on Friday with an opportunity to advance to the national championships.

"It's hard to put into words how proud I am of these girls," said Coach Vinny Gill. "On Saturday night we finished playing at 11 pm and got back to Cochran at 2:30 am. To be able to come out and play like we did on Saturday at 3 pm with a twelve-hour turnaround is remarkable. You would never have known watching the game that we were the team who had played double overtime the night before."

This is the first Region title in the history of the MGC program. "Three years ago the team won two games all
year," said Coach Gill.

"To have advanced this far is truly amazing and is a great credit to the players."

During the regular season MGC had lost twice to Darton by one goal, the last one in double overtime, so this victory was particularly rewarding for the Lady Warriors.

"We spoke all week about how our women's basketball team had lost to Darton twice last year before winning the state title, and this lesson inspired us to believe in ourselves."

In other news on Saturday, Tashana Vincent was name Region Player of the Year and the great season of the MGC men's team came to an end with a 3-1 loss to Young Harris. Tyler Landress scored the lone goal for the Warriors who finished the season with a 14- 5 record.
