Trevor Grant earns event’s medalist honors in leading VU
MIDDLETOWN, Ohio – Trevor Grant won medalist honors and the Vincennes University Golf Team captured the NJCAA Div. III Region XII Golf championship over the weekend at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown, OH.
Grant finished with an 8-over-par 224 (75, 72, 77) to edge out Cincinnati State’s Austin Kyle and Matt Nickoson, who tied for second at 10-over-par 226. Grant’s performance also spearheaded a strong Trailblazer effort as a team when VU carded a three-round score of 915. The Trailblazers topped host Cincinnati State (944) and Schoolcraft (947).
“We played very well; Trevor had three very solid rounds in very soggy conditions,” VU Coach Dennis Chattin said. “The rough was tall and thick. We played it at about 71-hundred yards and, with the wet conditions, it played every inch of it.”
Chattin, who was named NJCAA Region XII Coach of the Year for the fourth time, said another highlight besides Grant’s top performance was Jackson Cowden’s tournament-low round of 71 on the final 18 holes. He also lauded VU’s Shelby Stewart for his second round score of 73 after battling trying course conditions and some inconsistency to card an 82 later in the day.
Cowden finished fourth at 227 (76, 80, 71) and Stewart was sixth at 235 (82, 73, 80). Other Trailblazer individual scores were: Tyler Sloan, fifth place, 233 (78, 76, 79); and Ryan Reedy and Walker Smith, who tied for 12th at 245. Reedy’s three-round scores were 86, 78 and 81, while Smith finished with rounds of 80, 79 and 86.
