Ancilla Finishes Season at Region Tournament
May 10, 2013
BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN – For the second season in a row, the Ancilla College softball team qualified for the Region XII, District G Tournament. Unfortunately for the Chargers, they were bounced from the tournament in two games, losing 14-4 to NJCAA #16 Grand Rapids Community College in the opening round and 10-2 to Lansing Community College in the loser’s bracket.
Ancilla fell behind 4-0 in the opener before knotting the game up in the top of the fifth with a four run inning. Shelby McConnell singled with one out in the inning and moved to second on a single by Emily Wilbur. Both runners scored when the next batter, Kayleigh Schroeder, doubled to center. One out later, Marissa Sullivan belted a two run home run to tie the game.
Ancilla surrendered its biggest inning of the year in the bottom of the fifth, though. Grand Rapids put up ten runs behind three home runs to finish the game in five innings due to the eight-run rule.
In the loser’s bracket, Ancilla jumped out early. Wilbur started off the game with a single, moved to second on a Schroeder sacrifice and scored one out later on a Sullivan single.
After three runs from Lansing in the bottom of the second, Ancilla answered with a run in the top of the third. With one out in the inning, Wilbur reached base on an infield single and was moved to second on a Schroeder sacrifice. She scored one batter later when Courtney Clark singled to center.
Lansing finished the game off in the fifth and sixth innings, posting three and four runs in those respective innings to earn the eight-run rule victory.
“The big inning hurt us,” said Ancilla coach Scott Reese. “We had one of our own, but gave up too many crooked numbers in this tournament. I’m proud of our team for getting here. They worked really hard this season. I know they are disappointed with the outcome, but they have continued to set the standard of high expectations for the future of our program.”
Wilbur finished the tournament 4-6 with three runs scored. Sullivan added two hits and three RBI, while Schroeder and McConnell also added two hits each. Schroder also contributed two RBI.
Ancilla finishes the season 19-25. The sophomore class becomes just the second class to compete in the Region XII Tournament in both of their seasons at Ancilla. This team was one of the five teams in the twelve years of eligibility for the tournament to make it to the post season.
