 April 23, 2013

By Shawn Wansley, JCJC Sports Information Director

ELLISVILLE – Ryan Deemes and Christian Talley tossed a pair of complete game shutouts here Tuesday at Community Bank Park to lead 9th-ranked Pearl River Community College Wildcats to a sweep of 17th-rated Jones County Junior College.

Deemes gave up three hits in the opener as the Wildcats won, 1-0. Talley allowed five hits as PRCC took the nightcap, 5-0.

The Bobcats are now 27-15 overall and conclude MACJC South Division play with a 15-9 record. They have clinched a playoff spot, but are in third place in the league. PRCC is 17-5 and East Central is second at 15-7. If the Bobcats finish in third place, then they would travel to the North Division’s No. 2 team for a best-of-three playoff series on May 2-3.

The Wildcats are 34-10 overall.

The Bobcats end regular season play at home at 3 p.m. on Saturday against Northwest Mississippi.

Pearl River hosts Southwest on Saturday. East Central entertains Hinds on Saturday.

Cody Brewer, 5-2, allowed just two hits and struck out three, but took the tough luck loss.

Brewer retired the first 12 PRCC batters he faced until Krisjon Wilkerson led off the fifth inning with a triple off the wall in centerfield. Forrest Dungan’s groundout scored Wilkerson.

Nathan Pugh then doubled for the Wildcats, but was left stranded. That was the only other baserunner allowed by Brewer.

Deemes, 7-2, struck out two and walked one. He allowed a double to Josh Pankratz and singles to Benji Sullivan and Alex Shermer.

The Bobcats had a chance to score in the first when Codey Minter walked and Sullivan singled. But a fielder’s choice and a strikeout ended the threat.

In the seventh, Pankratz doubled with one out. But after Jordan Stark flied out to right, Shermer hit a sinking liner to right that was caught by Darius Knight to end the game.

Wildcats 5, Bobcats 0

Talley, 7-4, finished with nine strikeouts and no walks in game two.

JCJC’s best chance to score was in the bottom of the seventh when Pankratz singled with one out. With two outs, Shermer struck out, but reached on a wild pitch. Collin Dexter then singled to load the bases. But Knight caught Steven Billingsley’s fly ball to right to end the game.

PRCC took a 1-0 lead in the first when Knight walked and later scored on an error.

They made it 4-0 in the third. Darian Brown singled and one out later, Knight homered to left. Paul Pickerrell then singled and scored on Pugh’s single.

The final run came in the fifth when Dungan doubled and scored on Kollin Cannon’s single.

Dexter singled twice for Jones, while Trent Giambrone, Pankratz and Shermer added singles.

Pankratz started, went 2 1/3 innings and took the loss. He gave up four runs, five hits, walked two and struck out one. Dawson Kennard pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowed one run, three hits and walked two. Cole Barlow went the final 2 1/3 innings, gave up two hits and walked two.

Pugh and Brown each singled twice for PRCC, while Knight homered. Dungan doubled and Braxton Lee, Pickerrell, Wilkerson and Cannon added singles.
