Texans again take down 4x100-meter relay record at Baylor Invitational
 April 22, 2013

WACO – The South Plains College track and field teams completed their fifth meet of the outdoor season this weekend with the running of Baylor’s Dr. Pepper Invitational in Waco Saturday, April 20.

The Texans came away with six event titles during the day, including another new record in the 4x100-meter relay, while the Lady Texans captured one title.

For the second time this season, the men’s record in the 4x100-meter relay went down.  Jarvis Gotch led the quartet off and was followed by Shavez Hart, Lestrod Roland, and Ali Ahmed.  Ahmed crossed the line with baton in hand in 39.24 seconds, barely besting the time of 39.32 seconds run two weeks ago at Texas Tech.

Gotch, Hart, and Roland all ran on the record breaking team two weeks ago and Ahmed found himself on the anchor leg this weekend, in place of Trevor Mackey.

Ahmed also claimed top honors in the men’s 100-meter dash.  His time of 10.46 seconds was well off the season best time of 10.23 seconds he ran two weeks ago.

Gotch was the top long jumper in the meet, with a best leap of 23-feet, 10 inches on his second attempt.

Anthonio Mascoll ran a season best time in the 800-meter run to easily win his premier event, finishing with a time of 1:49.24.  Mascoll is the defending NJCAA champion in the event and has a personal best of 1:48.36, attained last season.

Texan hurdler Jovan Davis swept the hurdling events, winning the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.19 seconds, followed by the 400-meter hurdles in 51.87 seconds.

Darroneshia Lott ran a season and career best time of 2:06.20 to win the women’s 800-meter run, and was followed closely in second by teammate Desreen Montague, who also ran a season best time of 2:07.57.

The Texan and Lady Texan track teams will return to action Thursday, April 25 when they compete at the Red Raider Open in Lubbock.  On May 4, they will host the SPC open at the Texan Track and Field Complex in their final regular season meet before traveling to Hutchinson, Kan. for the NJCAA Track and Field Championships.  The Texans have won six outdoor team titles in a row and the Lady Texans have won four.
