BOONEVILLE, Miss. –  Northeast Mississippi Community College’s baseball program pushed closer to a berth in the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) State Baseball Playoffs with a sweep of Coahoma on Wednesday, April 17.

Northeast (24-13, 15-5 in North Division) opened up a two-game lead over Northwest Mississippi with the sweep of Coahoma 11-1, 15-5 at Harold T. White Field in Booneville.

Kent Farris’ Tigers hold a two-game lead over Northwest Mississippi and have the season series against the Rangers after taking all four contests while the Tigers have a three-game lead on Mississippi Delta.

Northeast and Mississippi Delta are set to square off in the final regular season game at Harold T. White Field on Saturday, April 27.

Itawamba currently holds down the fourth and final position in the playoffs with a .500 record in the division – 9-9 while East Mississippi (9-11) and Holmes (7-11) could make a push for the playoffs.

On Wednesday, Northeast wasted little time in pushing its division lead as the Tigers jumped out to a 6-0 lead against Coahoma and never looked back.

Falkner’s Will Robertson got the rally going as the Northeast sophomore laced a double that scored two and Biggersville’s Ethan Estes followed with a stand-up triple and scored on an overthrow to the cutoff for a 6-0 advantage against the visiting Tigers.

Ripley’s Ben Hellums went the distance in the 11-1 win striking out four and throwing to just four batters over the minimum while picking up his fourth win of the year.

In the nightcap, Northeast kept the pressure on Coahoma and rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to take a 6-3 lead after two complete.

After Coahoma cut the lead to 6-5, Northeast ended the game early in the sixth inning with nine runs over the fourth, fifth and sixth frames.

Northeast bumped the one-run lead to 10-5 after four and added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth.
Northeast ended the contest early when the Tigers tallied three runs in the sixth for a 10-run ruling.

Northeast will look to seal up a berth in the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) State Baseball Playoffs when the Tigers travel to Itawamba Community College on Saturday, April 20. First pitch in Fulton is set for 3 p.m.
