CORNING, N.Y. – The Tompkins Cortland Community College baseball team picked up a road doubleheader split at Corning Community College Thursday. After dropping game one 5-4, the Panthers bounced back for a 9-0 win in the nightcap. TC3 is now 4-10 overall and 4-8 in the West Division. Corning is 1-11 overall and 1-9 in the West Division.
TC3 opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first of game one, but Corning responded and led 3-1 after two innings. The Panthers cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth, but two more Corning runs in the bottom of the fifth made it 5-2. In game two, the Panthers took advantage of 10 walks to win comfortably. Akeem Vereen (John F. Kennedy H.S./Bronx) led the way from the top of the lineup, going 3-for-4, and Juan Balbuena (George Washington H.S./Harlem) reached base safely in every plate appearance, tying a TC3 record by drawing four walks. Matt Jones (Greene H.S./Greene) tossed the shutout, allowing six hits while striking out six.
