VU Women's Basketball Team victim of SWIC's 2nd half tear in 64-53 loss
 February 24, 2013

Southwestern Illinois went on an 18-4 run to open the second half en route to a 64-53 win Saturday night over the VU Women’s Basketball Team at the VU P.E. Complex.

Freshman Shelby Parmer led VU with 10 points, while sophomore Zhanna Chukhrii finished with nine and sophomore Taylor Hawkins and freshmen Chelsea Jellison and Ashley Hawkins all had eight points each.

Parmer and Chukhrii both had a pair of 3-pointers. Jellison and sophomore Monique Jones-Murphy both added a trey for VU (11-17).

The Trailblazers went to halftime with a 27-24 lead. But the Blue Storm’s rampage coming out of the locker room – fueled mostly by sophomore Janelle Cannon’s pair of 3-pointers, four two-point field goals and free throw - left VU in a 42-31 hole with a little less than 14:00 to play.

When it was all said and done, Cannon had scored 24 second half points on the way to 37 (including six treys) for the game. Sophomore Danielle Duncan hit four 3-pointers as part of her 16 for the Blue Storm.

The Trailblazers are idle until Friday when they host Roane State at 7 p.m. at the VU P.E. Complex on VU Sophomore Night to honor Chukhrii, Jones-Murphy and Taylor Hawkins. VU will then wrap up the season on Saturday, traveling to Southeastern Illinois in Harrisburg, IL.
