PALOS HILLS, Ill. --- Moraine Valley gave the Prairie State College women’s basketball team all it could handle Tuesday night, but in the end, the Pioneers persevered, dropping the Cyclones 58-53 in the two team’s second meeting of the year.

With the win, PSC improved to 19-8 overall and 12-1 in Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference play, remaining in a tie atop the league standings in a tie with Elgin.

The Pioneers didn’t get off to the most solid of starts, stumbling into the intermission on the wrong end of a 25-23 score.

Freshman guard and reigning NJCAA Region IV Player of the Week, Nijea Dixon (Joliet Central H.S.) tied the contest at 25 with a layup.

Sophomore center Amanda Pierce (Simeon H.S.) dropped in a layup with 19:06 remaining, giving the Pioneers a 27-25 edge.

Pierce led all scorers with a 19-point performance. She also made off with five steals.

Sophomore forward Danielle Zandstra (Heritage Christian H.S., Ind.) recorded 10 points while ripping down eight rebounds and blocking five shots.

The Pioneers established their largest lead of the night at 41-30 following a jumper by sophomore point guard Latoi Merriweather (Merrillville H.S., Ind.) with 14:19 to go.

The Pioneers will now close out Skyway action on Thursday when they host Morton (5 p.m.).
