No. 12 Senators win home opener over King
 February 12, 2013

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. – The Walters State Senators opened their home baseball schedule in fine fashion Monday by rolling past the visiting King College Tornado, 11-1, at Senator Field on the Walters State campus.
The Senators pounded out 12 hits, including four for extra bases, and Zach Walton and Grant Painter combined to strike out 11 King batters and gave up just four hits in the win.

With the victory, Walters State improves to 4-4 on the season with their fourth win in the last five games going into a weekend home series with USC Salkehatchie and Sinclair.

The Senators wasted little time getting on the board, plating a run in the bottom of the first inning. Elijah Sutherland slapped a leadoff single, stole second and scored on a grounder by Reid Mathews to give Walters State a 1-0 lead.

After going scoreless for two innings, the Tornado got on the board in the third. Logan Schmidt smacked a triple and scored on a grounder by Charlie Fields to knot the score at 1, but that was all King could get off of Walton (1-0). The sophomore side-armer scattered four hits in five innings in his first start since his senior year of high school.

The Senators reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the third. Sutherland reached on an error, and after Colin Bennett reached by being hit by a pitch, Jared Allen knocked in a run with a single. Dustin Woody added a two-run double, extending the lead to 4-1.

WSCC kept the offense going in the fourth, scoring three more runs. Chris Hipchen roped a one-out double and Sutherland drew a walk to start the rally. Alex Couch pinch-hit for Jake Farr and ripped a two-run triple and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Mathews to make it 7-1.

The Senators put another run on the board in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Brycen Roberts that plated Allen to push the margin to 8-1.

In the sixth, Grant Painter took over on the mound in relief of Walton and baffled the King batters for three innings. The freshman from Knoxville Halls allowed only one batter to reach base, and he struck out seven batters in three innings to get the save.

Walters State added single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to end the game by the mercy rule. Corey Greeson had an RBI single in the sixth inning, Roberts tripled and scored on a sacrifice ply by Hipchen in the seventh and Couch smashed a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to end the game, 11-1.

Sutherland and Couch led the Senators with two hits each, as 10 different batters had hits for WSCC.

Schmidt, Jacob Bohanon, Stephen Massey and Tallas Snodgrass each had a hit in the loss, and Logan Hess was the losing pitcher.

The Senators will be back in action Friday when they host USC Salkehatchie at Senator Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
